The unnatural path is always cheaper, and usually easier, with the notable exception of death, whenever any question possesses death as a potential answer it is always the cheapest and easiest option available whether it is the natural course or the unnatural. A determined girl could drown in the sink of a gas station bathroom, with a total personal expenditure of zero. The fact that suicide does not lay waste to our population is proof enough to me that we were not built to take the easy way out. And so I keep shopping, looking for sales, looking for deals.
"Is there anything I can help you find, Ma'am?" I turned to find a pimply stock boy, holding an artichoke in one hand.
"Do I look like a Ma'am to you?"
"You look like you're at least five years older than me, and you've got rings on most your fingers, including your left ring finger, which means you are as likely to be married as not, and even though a married woman would generally rather be mistaken for a younger woman I was raised to treat my elders with the respect they deserve. I apologize if I have offended you."
"I'm not married." I hated it when I met an intelligent well-mannered kid. At least he had bad acne.
"Can I help you find anything?"
"I'm just browsing."
"Let me know if you need any help."
"Thank you." I wondered if he offered that help to everybody, or if he just thought I was attractive and singled me out for it. Most likely he singled me out, even if he did not realize it, people are always more willing to be helpful to people they think are pretty. I made my living off of it. But it still bothered me in situations where the exchange was out in the open, this is a grocery store, everyone uses it, everyone pays the same costs with money that works just as well. There is no decent reason to be more helpful to any one person than another, I know plenty of girls that love the attention, that take it for granted or bare it as a mark of pride, and I think they're foolish. I know that one day I am going to be old, and I won't be beautiful anymore, and no one will single me out to help. It will happen to these girls that love the attention as well, and it will kill them a little bit. Looks are a blessing, and can be great tool to help you get where you want to go, but they are not you, and if you treat them as such, you will fade as they do.
