I can't imagine a more painful moment than giving up your dreams. Not letting them slowly fade as you age and eventually admitting that they will never happen, as most people do, but at the height of your potential making a choice that guarantees that they will never come to fruition. I did it in a basement apartment on west 78th street. I cried into my hands while Tony, my husband to be, smoked cigarettes and told me he loved me and that I should be happy because this was the greatest day of any woman's life. There was nothing grand to mark the death of the life that I had wanted, it simply disappeared when I finally brought myself to look up at him and said, "Ok."
