"I always said it's a shame that homosexuals can't reproduce, I think you and Larry would do all right by a child, when are you two going to adopt?"

"We keep talking about it, but I can't convince Larry to try. He keeps saying we need to be more financially secure before they'll consider giving a child to a gay couple. "

"You should tell him to talk to me, I've seen the homes where some of these kids end up, a child could do a hell of a lot worse than you two."

"I hope the state sees it your way, Janice. I'll see you in the morning." "Goodbye, Nick."

I slid out of Nick's pick up truck and hoisted my bag over my shoulder, gave him a last wave and turned to walk up my drive, praying that I'd be able to sit down and relax for awhile before I had to make dinner. The odds were about even, and my boys hadn't had a surprise for me yesterday so I figured I was about due again.

I pushed open the screen door dropped my sack on the foot stool that sits next to it. The kitchen was a little messier than I would have it in an ideal world, but it didn't look much worse than I left it this morning, the peanut butter was sitting out, but I think I could forgive that. This was a good sign, most of the opportunities for the worst messes were in the kitchen.

"Boys!" I called out. No answer, but this was to be expected. I walked into the living room and found Shawn sitting cross-legged on the floor about three feet away from the television, control pad in his hand, playing whatever game he managed to talk me into buying for him on his last birthday.

"Shawn, baby, where's your brother at?"

"He's upstairs." He replied without looking away from the television. I took a seat on the sofa behind him and watched him play his football game for a minute or two before I leaned my head back on the cushions and just shut my eyes.

"How was your day, baby? Did you get along with Mrs. Henderson." Mrs. Henderson was his second grade teacher, she almost always sent a note home with Shawn saying something. But I wouldn't find out if there was one today until I talked to Andre.

"It was ok."

"She send anything home for me to look at?"

"No. But she said we're going to go on a field trip next week."

"That's nice, baby. Where are you going?"
