"I'm going to wake her up anyway."

"NUU unnh. I'm gonna wake you up."

"You girls do what you like but if either of you wake me up, you'll be sorry."

"You always wake up first, daddy."

"That's a good point. What do you girls want for breakfast?"

"French toast!"

"No, not French toast, pancakes!"

"No, we had pancakes yesterday, French toast!"

"We always have French Toast."

"What if I told you that today is special and you can have French pancakes."

"What are French pancakes?" They chimed in unison.

"You'll see. Run into the bathroom and clean up and then you'll see."

"Where's, Mommy?" Lucy finally asked.

"She had to go do something, hurry up and clean up and I'll brush your hair while you eat."

I hadn't made crepes in a long time, but they were pretty simple if you had the right equipment. Which consisted mostly of a really big flat pan. And besides, the advantage to cooking for children is that you're not dealing with the most discerning palates.

I was going to be thirty in a few weeks, and I was now a single dad. Thinking about Lorraine made me want to put my fist through the wall. We had been so young when we'd met, we went to high school together. In Las Vegas, she used to come into the grocery store and make messes so I would have to clean them up. She followed me to school in California, and I thought for sure that she'd leave me in a couple of weeks, we were surrounded by beautiful college kids, and Lorraine had always been better looking than me, I thought a lot better looking, I figured some chiseled surf bum would be all it took to induce her to forget about me. But the longer we were there, the more she focused on me. She started talking about marriage in my sophomore year, and even though I had always planned to wait until I was older she had convinced me to marry her by the time I was starting grad school. Then she started in on kids, all the while I was going to school and taking her to parties and introducing her to my friends the only person she looked at was me, and if I'd left it up to her, I don't think she would have met a single other person.
