"Excuse me sir, could you possibly keep an eye on my daughter for just a moment or two, I've just got to pop into this adult bookstore and pick up an item for my wife, who waits impatiently at home. Certainly I'll just be out and in with no more than the very quickest of light browsing to slow my progress."

And the reply came most naturally, "What the fuck are you talking about, are you fucking crazy? You can't just leave a kid with a stranger, and you really shouldn't even have her in this part of town. Get the fuck out of here, I should call the fucking cops on you."

Though his logic seemed strong I was confident that with only a little delving I would find a flaw, and rather than waste such precious moments searching for the inevitable validation of my actions I elected to turn to the next passing stranger and restate my plea, this time to an older woman with wild tousled hair that led me to conclude that she must have more than the life experience necessary to recognize any possible threat to my precious daughter's well-being, which might possibly arise whilst I busied myself in the "Empornium" at the corner of Jones and English.

"Madame, have you a moment to spare for me? I would be greatly indebted to you if you could cast a caring eye towards my daughter for just a short expanse of time while I sojourn in yonder shop of mature tastes." I beseeched humbly.

Her reply came to me in such a high-pitched fashion that I could not be certain of the exact vocabulary she had selected to convey her message. But the wide and crooked grin, which was slowly spreading itself across her face, and the steadfastness with which she studied my daughter, provided me all the assurance I needed of her fine character and noble intent. She had surely and whole-heartedly accepted my proposal. With a quick kiss on the forehead, I whispered words of instant return to my most darling child, and though she cried a little at my departure she moved slowly as I pushed her towards the waiting arms of our benevolent stranger.

I do tend to forget the enduring love that resides within me for adult bookstores, and all purveyors of adult accessories for that matter. Aisle upon aisle of the most natural and honest entertainment mankind has yet to allow himself. The soft efficient glow of overhead halogen lights reinforcing the notion that this is a place of equality, with none of the gaudy embellishments so common amongst establishments of human joy, which in truth serve mostly to ward off a substantial portion of the populace, which said establishments find undesirable for whichever petty reason seems most convenient at the moment.
